Comments on AZ Republic Opinions

29 Sunday Apr 2012

Two editorials appear today in the AZ Republic which juxtapose each other perfectly. On one page, there is an unemotional fact based piece on the upcoming death and destruction of social security and Medicare.  The picture  illustrates the root of the problem. Princess Eugenics herself, HHS Kathleen Sebelius, the heinous, communist Nazi is busy steering Medicare off a cliff to put everyone on Obamacare.

On the other, an incongruous diatribe by the dean emeritus of U of A college of medicine who thinks Obamacare is the bees’ knees. Obamacare is the socialist Leviathan that will destroy Medicare, healthcare and lives. Repealing Obamacare must be the number one priority of all voters in November, lest memories of Obama’s Greek columns of the 2008 convention morph from a bombastic display of artifice and ego into the harbinger of renaming our country “The Peoples Republic of Greece. “

Letter the AZ Republic won’t print #3

The letter decrying the loss of funding for Planned Parenthood left out a few facts. Let us realize Planned Parenthood nationally raises ONE BILLION DOLLARS nationally. No one is suggesting they cease to exist, but it is not reasonable, to expect taxpayers to foot that bill.

But more chilling are the writers views on Eugenics. To suggest that by the state not paying for birth control and abortion, society will be saddled with a bigger bill when forced to subsidize the raising of children by poor women. Such thinking smacks of Nazi-ism and is vile among decent people. Who is to say women, because they are poor cannot be inspired to seek a better life for themselves and their children?

Moreover, alternatives to abortion include adoption, the writer left that our as well in his quest to “stop the multiplication of the unfit”.

Cheap birth control is available readily and free birth control is available through title X. Tax payer funds need not foot the bill for a large, overfed private agency that does even a better job fundraising than they do performing abortions.

On raising kids and personal choices

Snarky questions on Ann Romney’s decision to devote her life to raising children abound. Most often, snorts of derision coupled with “sure, how many nannies, cooks, maids and chauffeurs did she have?”

Has anyone asked her? Have any come forward? I am betting the number was small, very small, if any. Here is what we do know. They didn’t use chauffeurs to go on vacation. Like the rest of us who grew up in the northeast, vacations were endless car trips. I remember one where my family stopped for gas, another family pulled up at the next pump, with a carload of boys. He peered into our car of girls and asked my dad if he wanted to trade. I bet Mitt Romney felt that way more than once too.

Nannies? maybe, maybe not. If there was one, she clearly didn’t raise the kids. Cooks? I bet not. I remember Mitt saying how worried Ann was that she wouldn’t be able to cook or take care of her family when they got her MS diagnosis. Mitt said he was happy to eat cereal and peanut butter sandwiches for dinner. Doesn’t sound like they had a cook to me.

Mitt grew up wealthy and his own father made him and his brother shovel the driveway. I call on these anecdotes to demonstrate, by all or most accounts, this family isn’t much different than mine, nor how I grew up. As a middle class mom, I have no issues connecting with Mitt and Ann Romney.

All the Presidents Dogs

Can I please just point out the fact that Seamus’ riding in the crate atop the family station wagon happened back in 1983? Let’s look at a dogs life in 1983. Back in those days, it was typical for beloved family dogs to live in the backyard with access to a dog house. Where I lived, there were no leash laws and dogs were free to roam and romp at will, sometimes with tragic results. I never saw anyone walking a dog on a leash. Fast forward to present times, we now knows dogs are pack animals, it is cruel to leave them outside away from the family pack, no matter how big their yard, or access to fields and forest, it is critical they be leash walked daily. In the case of mine, twice daily weather permitting.

I am sure the Romney’s were loving dog owners and were happy to include Seamus on their family vacations. He did willingly climb up into that crate. If it was illegal then, as it is now, I am pretty sure a state trooper would have pulled them over.

In contrast, most people know Bo drew the short straw when it came time to manufacture a ‘rescue’ dog for the Obamas. No, Bo does not have to ride in a crate, he often flies in his own plane at taxpayer expense for photo-ops with this rented family. If these people did anything with this dog away from the cameras, surely he would know how to walk on a leash by now, which he does not, he is always pulling and out front. In contrast, George Bush’s dogs were never on a leash and always right at his heel.
